Test protocol in brief
We used 150 mm pressure mats to map peak load on a 90 kg male side sleeper and a 65 kg female back sleeper. Movement transfer was logged with an accelerometer placed 30 cm from a 5 kg drop weight. Edge compression was the millimetre drop recorded when sitting on the corner with a 100 kg load. Surface temperature change was recorded with an infrared camera after 30 minutes of 36 °C heat pad contact.
Round 1 – pressure relief
Winners: Simba Hybrid Luxe and Rest Assured Knowlton. The Luxe showed peak hip pressure of 36 mm Hg for the lighter tester and 42 mm Hg for the heavier tester, lowest in group. Knowlton’s latex pillow top came close at 38 mm Hg and 45 mm Hg respectively. Hypnos’ firmer spring pack peaked at 61 mm Hg under the heavier tester’s shoulder, fine for front sleepers but less forgiving on the side.
Round 2 – spinal alignment & support
Alignment was gauged by digital inclinometer from C7 to L5. Emma Hybrid Premium held the male tester’s spine within 1° of neutral and the female within 0.5°, beating pricier rivals. Hypnos Alcester Ortho Extra kept spines straight too but only when testers lay supine; on the side shoulders sat high and the lumbar dipped.
Round 3 – motion isolation
The accelerometer measured peak g-force 30 cm away from a controlled drop.

A firm perimeter stops that sliding-off feeling. Hypnos sat rock solid, dipping only 16 mm. Bodyshape 1000 dipped 42 mm, enough to feel unstable if you sit to dress. Simba Ultra dipped 24 mm, Emma 28 mm, Silentnight 30 mm.

Mid £500–£1,000 tier: Rest Assured Knowlton offers a 200-night trial, rare at this price, plus a 10-year warranty.

Brand verdicts – who should buy which
Emma – best for balanced comfort on a budget
Spine alignment rivals luxury models, motion isolation beats Silentnight and edge stability is respectable. If you need an affordable all-rounder Emma scores highest overall value.
Silentnight – eco friendly cooling on a budget
